Google Talk

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Google Inc. is set to introduce its own instant messaging system, the Los Angeles Times reported on Tuesday, marking the expansion by the Web search leader into text and also voice communications.

Citing unnamed sources "familiar with the service," the Los Angeles Times said that Google's Instant Messaging program would be called Google Talk and could be launched as early as Wednesday.

Google Talk goes beyond text-based instant messaging using a computer keyboard to let users hold voice conversations with other computer users, the newspaper quoted a source as saying.

A Google spokeswoman declined to comment on the company's product plans.

If confirmed, the combined computer text and voice-calling service would put Google in competition with a similar service pioneered by Skype, which has attracted tens of millions of users, especially in Europe, to its own service.

Separately, independent journalist Om Malik on his blog at http://gigaom.com/ pointed to technical clues that suggest Google is preparing to run an instant messaging service based on an open-source system known as Jabber.

Jabber technology would allow Google instant message users to connect with established IM systems that also work with Jabber, including America Online's ICQ and Apple Computer Inc.'s iChat, Malik said.

"This is the worst possible news for someone like Skype, because now they will be up against not two but three giants who want to offer a pale-version of Skype," he wrote.

Earlier this week, Google said it was branching out beyond pure search to help users manage e-mail, instant messages, news headlines and music. It introduced a new service called the Google Sidebar, a stand-alone software program that sits on a user's desktop and provides "live" information updates.

Over the past year or so, the company has expanded into e-mail, online maps, personalized news and more.

The product push comes as rivals Yahoo Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Time Warner Inc.'s AOL are all pushing to upgrade existing instant messaging systems and expand into new Internet phone-calling services.

Google's moves take it beyond its roots in Web search and closer to becoming a broad-based Internet media company.

With instant messaging, Google would be breaking into a market in which its major competitors boast tens of millions of subscribers to their established instant messaging services.

America Online, with its AIM and ICQ brands, counts more than 40 million IM users in the United States alone. Yahoo has around 20 million and Microsoft's MSN Messenger numbers some 14 million users, according to recent comScore Media Metrix data.

RSS広告の会社PheedoがGoogleのRSS広告特許について反論している。

Google RSS Ad Patent Protection Explained As most folks already are aware, Google has filed a patent application attempting to cover their insertion of ads in syndicated content.

At Pheedo, we’ve been fielding a lot of questions about what this means for both Pheedo and RSS advertising as a whole. First off, the fact that Google is taking measures to protect itself in RSS advertising is a point of validation for our growing industry. Even though Google's been very aggressive in the past with patent filings, it's validation nonetheless. This filing by Google wasn’t much of a surprise coming from a company of its size and resources, and actions like these are also to be expected in a fast-growing industry.

Second, it’s important to understand that Google is very early in the process, and it’s too speculative to say what protection, if any, might be granted. The biggest concern raised by this development is whether Google will somehow own or have a monopoly on RSS advertising. The answer to that question is a resounding “No”. Simply put, for both legal and practical reasons, Google is not going to ‘own’ RSS advertising. At best, Google may gain some protection for its specific techniques and methods of inserting and tracking ads in syndicated content.

This will have little impact on Pheedo - or RSS advertising as a whole – since the development of RSS advertising was well underway prior to Google filing its patent application. Thus, despite some concerns that Google may gain a monopoly on RSS advertising, this is simply not the case.

The other question is, "Are we going to file a patent application in response?" The answer is, “No we will not file a patent application in response. We'll file patent applications when it makes sense for us strategically.” When you file, you make your trade secrets public and the timing for doing so is important. But we will keep working hard to know our audience and create targeted RSS advertisements that work.

GoogleがRSS広告に特許を2003年12月に出願していたらしい!RSSの他にも、Atom、XML、Geotargetingも包括している。

Google has filed a patent application for serving targeted ads in RSS feeds.

The patent application, filed under the name of Nelson Minar, who works for Google AdWords, describes “[i]ncorporating targeted ads into information in a syndicated, e.g., RSS, presentation format in an automated manner.”

The patent covers RSS, Atom and XML methods of delivery and describes in detail just how Google delivers targeted content to RSS feeds. It also covers geotargeting based on where the user reading the RSS content is located. Google currently is beta testing AdSense for Feeds, serving targeted ad content from its AdWords program.

The patent application was filed on December 31, 2003, and has been assigned number 20050165615. They sure took a while to get around to it.
